500 ml/18 fl oz milk 200 g/7 oz barley
150 g/5 oz shelled fresh peas or frozen peas pinch of chilli powder salt and pepper


1.Bring the milk and 1 litre/1 3/4 pints water to the boil. Add the barley and peas, season with salt, pepper and chilli powder to taste and cook over a low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
2.Ladle into a soup tureen. This is a very simple soup, but is nutritious and tasty.
3.It may be enriched by adding diced chicken breast.
